The government estimates that by 2030 42% of Americans will be obese, loosing $1 trillion dollars to medical care and lowered productivity. In light of this, funding youth nutrition is a growing trend in the quest for food equity. Numerous initiatives addressing child nutrition have been gearing up in recent years.
Newman's Own committed $5 million towards grant-making in child nutrition in 2012 alone. Other contributors include foundations like Robert Wood Johnson, Kellogg, and Ford. The most prominent of these contributions being the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation who's funded an estimated 277 grants since 2003.
Other companies have taken a more comprehensive approach to their youth grantmaking. The Genesee Area Focus Fund has a six-pronged focus: "academic support, enrichment activities, physical fitness and healthy behaviors, nutrition education, youth development and leadership skill building, and family and community engagement."
