Ohio lawmakers launch healthy food grant program

Recently, Ohio Congressman Steve Stivers helped launch a new program in Ohio that would help provide more opportunities for fresh foods to areas on the state that are far away from stores that have fresh food available. The Healthy Food for Ohio Program (HFFO) would direct money to vendors, from co-ops and farmers markets to independent stores to build up business in undeserved areas known as "food deserts". The grants can be used to buy land or to extend businesses.

Associate director of the Food Trust, Caroline Harries said that over 1 million Ohioans do not have access to fresh foods such as fruit and vegetables. A diet with fresh food can help reduce the risks of certain kinds of health problems and promote good health.
