To recover from its water contamination crisis, the city of Flint, Michigan will get $125 million in funding from community organizations, including the Mott Foundation, the Ford Foundation, and the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, among several others. The Mott Foundation will give $100 million over five years and the FlintNOW Foundation will give $10 million. The funds will also go towards assisting family health programs, education, economic development, and non-profit agencies.
High levels of lead in the water caused disease and death after the city began getting drinking water from the Flint River in a money-saving move. The water was not treated to prevent contamination from lead. Residents are still using bottled water and filters even though they have been switched back to water provided by the Detroit-based Great Lakes Water Authority.
