Sanford-Burnham Secures $275 Million Gift

An anonymous donor has presented the Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute a $275 million gift to help the La Jolla-based center speed up development of drugs and therapies to treat afflictions such as cancer, diabetes and Alzheimer's disease.

Eric Topol, founder of the Scripps Translational Science Institute, said that the funding timing couldn't be better, with the pressures on governmental funding of biomedical research at the National Institutes of Health.

Nonprofit impact investing firm, Acumen, has invested $1.2 million to KZ Noir, a Rwanda-based coffee processing company owned by Kaizen Venture Partners. The investment will equip KZ Noir the funds for working capital, debt refinancing, and capacity expansion.
