To resolve the issue, innovators are trying to change the form and function of higher education. Pendoley has observed that teaching social entrepreneurship is a key part of solving the problem.

Pendoley has listed programs that are "helping students develop the sense of purpose and direction they need to take advantage of the enormous value their colleges offer."
