Thinking About The Best Ways To Give To Charity? Here's Where To Start


It's that time of year again: the time of year when Americans open their wallets to give to causes of their choosing.

In fact, Americans gave $51 billion to charity in 2017, an increase of 7% over the previous year, reports the Wall Street Journal.

It's a trend that has been growing in recent years, with individuals giving more than $326 billion to philanthropic causes in 2021, the industry's biggest donation ever, per the National Philanthropic Trust, and smaller donations going to social justice causes instead of big national nonprofits.

"Much of our nation's understanding of charity involves large-scale donors and a philanthropic industry historically intertwined with exploitive capitalism and, fundamentally, white supremacy," Michael Thatcher, CEO of Charity Navigator, tells Mashable.

"This is a movement away from big philanthropy and from the big charities, to a certain extent."

He says the nonprofit's new website, which debuted in November, is part of the democratization of philanthropy by rating smaller charities and making it easier for donors to find them.
