The Aboitiz Group, a conglomerate based in the Philippines, wants to be "the Philippines' first techglomerate," and one way it's trying to do that is by turning seaweed into plastic, Fortune reports.

According to a press release, the Aboitiz Group's "Reimagine" initiative is designed to create a sustainable and profitable seaweed industry that provides jobs, promotes biodiversity, reduces plastic pollution, and mitigates the effects of climate change.

Under Reimagine, seaweed farmers are taught better farming techniques and are introduced to green technology that will expand their product range to potentially include bioplastics, protein powder, cosmetics, and health supplements.

The Philippines is the fourth-largest producer of seaweed globally, and the Aboitiz Group wants to make it the first country in the Asia-Pacific to become plastic-neutral.

Aboitiz Group is also working with the Philippines' leading thrift bank, Union Bank, to become plastic-neutral through the production of biodegradable and compostable packaging.
