Uae Has History and Innovation to Light Up Cop28

The United Arab Emirates kicked off the 28th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in Doha, Qatar, on Monday with a promise to keep global warming to "well below" 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit) and strive for a net zero by 2050, the AP reports.

"We will continue to raise ambition and focus on climate action as an enormous opportunity for economic and social progress," Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed al-Nahyan, the UAE's president, said in a statement ahead of the start of the talks.

The UAE is the first country to ratify the Paris Agreement and the first in the Arab world to announce a net zero by 2050 strategy, per the AP.

The conference is taking place amid a backdrop of the Trump administration's decision to pull out of the Paris Agreement, which was signed by nearly 200 countries in December.

The White House said in a statement Monday that President Trump has notified the UNFCCC that he will not be participating in the conference, which is taking place just over a week after the US pulled out of the Paris Agreement, citing a lack of support from the Chinese government.

The UNFCCC is hosting the conference in Qatar for the first time.
