A new report from the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization finds that 1.2 billion people in Asiamore than a third of the world's populationface food insecurity, meaning they can't afford a healthy diet, Business Insider reports.

And that's not all: The report also finds that the average cost of a healthy diet in Asia is $3.98 per person per day.

"This unaffordability healthy diets is already a major concern, and this is further accentuated with other peculiarities here that are threatening the food supply," Ismahane Elouafi, FAO's chief scientist, tells FoodNavi.

One of those peculiarities is climate change, which is rising two times faster in Asia than in the rest of the world.

"This accelerated climate change means that there has been an increase in the frequency and severity of natural disasters here, which makes the region and its people even more vulnerable to food insecurity," Elouafi says.

She adds that there's also a lot of demand for food and land use, so there's a need for "all types of technologies that can help us to produce more nutritious and help to pull the needed nutrition from all sources, from plants to animals to seafood and so on."
