Anand Balu Nellippallil and Pavithra Pathirathna have been awarded $200,000 grants from the National Science Foundation as part of its "highly competitive" Engineering Research Initiation program.
The purpose of the awards is to support new academic investigators in initiating their research programs and advancing in their careers as researchers, educators, and innovators, reports Florida Tech.
Nellippallil's project focuses on co- designing materials, products, and manufacturing processes to achieve desired product performance.
Pathirathna's project involves developing carbon-fiber microelectrodes for simultaneous electrochemical sensing of multiple neurotransmitters and toxic substances.
The project will "seek to promote the progress of science by strategically integrating knowledge and techniques from the fields of systems engineering, engineering design, and materials science to enable a fundamental understanding of the couplings between products, materials, and manufacturing processes," Florida Tech reports.
