The opioid epidemic is taking a heavy toll on Philadelphia, with 1,413 fatal overdoses in the city last year, up 11% from the previous high of 1,276 in 2021.

That's why the city is offering $3.3 million in grants to community-based organizations to fight the crisis, Philly.com reports.

The grants come from the Overdose Prevention and Community Healing Fund, a joint initiative by the City Foundation and the Scattergood Foundation.

"This second round of grants reflects the City of Philadelphia's commitment to ensuring that communities devastated by the opioid epidemic have a say in how and where settlement funds are re-invested," says Mayor Jim Kenney.

The fund will focus on three areas: overdose prevention, community and family healing, and substance use prevention.

" grantmaking has the power to embolden communities and create impactful long-lasting change," says Joe Pyle, president of the Scattergood Foundation.
