Simcoe County Launches 'Innovative' Climate Action Plan

A Canadian county has set a goal of cutting its greenhouse gas emissions by 44% by 2030, the CBC reports.

According to a press release, Simcoe County, which includes Barrie and Orillia in southern Ontario, has adopted a "zero-emissions corporate climate action plan."

The plan, which was approved by county council last month, aims to reduce corporate greenhouse gas emissions by 44% from 2021's levels by 2030, the Canadian Press reports.

The plan calls for the county to reduce energy use in its buildings by 30% and to make its fleet of zero-emission vehicles a reality by 2050.

"Our new Corporate Climate Action Plan takes innovative steps forward to ensure that the County continues to lead in providing a regional approach to environment stewardship," Warden Basil Clarke says in the press release.

The plan also calls for the county to improve energy efficiency in its buildings, reduce demand for energy in existing buildings, and to use renewable and low-carbon energy, including solar and geothermal energy.

The plan is part of Canada's Partners for Climate Protection program, which aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by $50 million a year by 2030, the CBC reports.
