Book-Lover Bill Gates Says Reading Inspired His Philanthropy

When Bill Gates was a child, his parents banned him from bringing books to the dinner table, reports Mashable.

His love of reading, however, has since led the Microsoft co-founder to create the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which has an endowment of $67.3 billion.

"I had a long period from about age 18 to 40 when I was very monomaniacal," he told Trevor Noah in a recent podcast interview.

"I was lucky enough that as other people took over Microsoft, I got to go and read and learn all about health challenges, why children die."

Among his summer reading recommendations for 2023: The Song of the Cell by Siddhartha Mukherjee and Not the End of the World by Hannah Ritchie.
