Ulster Receives State Grant to Reduce Lead Exposure in Rental Housing

A pilot program in New York's Ulster County to help low- and moderate-income tenants deal with lead poisoning has been awarded $326,000, the Times Herald-Record reports.

The county's Department of Health and Planning will use the money to help tenants in "communities of concern" that include the 12401 Kingston Zip Code.

The county has identified 100 properties in that Zip Code with confirmed lead hazards, and the pilot program will help them prepare for a more comprehensive effort as part of the state's Lead Hazard Rental Registry, which will include inspections and enforcement mechanisms to remediate lead exposure in all residential dwellings with two or more rental units built prior to 1980.
