New Air Quality Monitors Near Allentown Schools Aimed at Improved Health Outcomes

If you're in Allentown, Pa., this summer, you'll be hearing a lot about your air quality from an unlikely source: outside schools.

The city is teaming up with the Center for Sustainable Innovation and a nonprofit called US Ignite to place air monitors around a handful of schools, reports the Allentown Morning Call.

The idea is to get a better sense of what's going on with the city's air, especially given the proliferation of trucks in the area.

"Many people understand the impact that air quality has on quality of life, on learning, on kids' absenteeism, on a number of different factors that influence your ability to succeed," says Vicky Kistler, the city's community and economic development director.

"We are ecstatic because it's our hope that we can start to address air quality issues on many fronts."
