When you think of the world's tropical regions, the Australian city of Cairns probably doesn't come to mind.
But that's about to change.
The state of Queensland has committed $60 million to a new Cairns Health and Innovation Center, which will be "a global center for excellence," per a government press release.
It's designed "to address the unique health problems of the tropical world and build upon existing expertise to address the health needs locally and in neighboring countries around tropical medicine and research, First Nations health, as well as establishing a multidisciplinary rural generalist center for excellence," per the release.
The center, which will be located near Cairns Hospital, will "leverage our Asia-Pacific connections, lead better outcomes for locals, and deliver cutting-edge research on the health challenges unique to the tropics," says Queensland Premier Steven Miles.
The release notes the center will be "a significant attractor for all clinicians to advance their research and education opportunities" and "will be a key asset for recruiting and retaining a skilled clinical workforce."
