New Mexico Governor Declares State Of Emergency In Lincoln County And Mescalero ...

New Mexico Gov.

Michelle Lujan Grisham has declared a state of emergency as two wildfires continue to burn out of control in the southern part of the state.

The South Fork Fire has burned through 20,000 acres and is only 10% contained, while the Salt Fire has destroyed more than 500 structures and forced the evacuation of the entire village of Ruidoso, reports the Albuquerque Journal.

"The magnitude of the fires is beyond local control and requires immediate state intervention to protect public health, safety, and welfare," Lujan Grisham said in a statement.

"We are deploying every available resource to control these wildfires, and to provide support to the Village of Ruidoso, the Mescalero Reservation, and surround areas."

The cause of the fires is under investigation.
