"These practices ensure a brighter, more sustainable future for healthy food, cleaner, and climate resilience."
So says Maryland Department of Agriculture Secretary Kevin Atticks in announcing the winners of the state's second year of the Healthy Soils Competitive Fund, a $993,000 grant program designed to help farmers adopt "innovative conservation practices that benefit climate, soil, and water," per a press release.
This year's winners, who will receive up to $50,000 over the next three years, will be helping to remove diseased ash trees, plant native trees and shrubs, establish cover crops, test soil health for vegetable and cut flower production, and more.
"We are excited by the enthusiasm and creativity of Maryland farmers who participated in this program," Atticks says.
The fund was developed based on recommendations from the Chesapeake and Atlantic Coastal Bays Trust Fund and the Moore-Miller administration.
