Huntington Local Middle School Celebrates New Smartlab

So says Pete Ruby, superintendent of Ohio's Huntington Local Middle School, which this fall became the first school in the country to use Creative Learning Systems' SmartLab, a student-led, project-based learning environment that's designed "to give students in grades 5-8 hands-on experience in science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM), all within a student-led, project-based learning environment," per the school's Facebook page.

Students use the SmartLab's touch-screen tablets, laptops, and smartphones to work on real-world applications like 3D modeling and 3D-printed circuit boards, as well as work on their own projects, reports Gizmodo.

"Our initiative with SmartLabs has provided our students with cutting-edge technology experiences that relate to real-world applications," says Ruby.

Nonprofit impact investing firm, Acumen, has invested $1.2 million to KZ Noir, a Rwanda-based coffee processing company owned by Kaizen Venture Partners. The investment will equip KZ Noir the funds for working capital, debt refinancing, and capacity expansion.
