Medicaid Coverage Is Expanding Into Prisons in 2025, Starting With Children


A new policy allows states to provide Medicaid health care coverage to inmates for specific services 30-90 days before their release.

Medicaid and CHIP must provide medical, dental and behavioral health screenings, as well as diagnostic services, within 30 days before release.

"This is really the first time Medicaid is being used to cover some health services for people who are incarcerated," said Elizabeth Hinton, an expert on Medicaid policy.
