University of California, Riverside's Bourns College of Engineering students have developed an inexpensive titanium dioxide roof tile coating that can take off smog-forming nitrogen oxides.
According to the students, if this coating is applied to thousands of tiled rooftops in Southern California, it could eliminate tons of pollution from the air every day. The students earned recognition and prize money with their research in an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) student design competition.
