New Web Tool to Measure Subjective Impressions of Urban Environments


In the latest issue of the journal PLoS One, MIT's Media Lab researchers affords a new online tool that they hope will help social scientists take a more closer look at emotional responses of urban residents to their environments.

The tool provides online volunteers with a couple of images drawn at random from Google Maps' collection of street-level photographs. Each volunteer chooses the image that represents some "qualitative" feature. Research findings show that the perceived-safety scores for neighborhoods in New York are connected well with the prevalence of violent crimes.
