A study in developmental psychology published in the Journal of Child and Family Studies documents that being a parent can be learned.

A How-to Parenting program is designed to help parents know how to react to the feelings and plight of their children. In the process of the study, the researchers have found that certain skills were developed, such as empathy and decrease in parental behaviors aimed at shaming children.
