Childhood Poverty and Stress Impacts Brain Function in Later Life


According to research published online in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the stress of growing up poor may be a core mechanism that accounts for connection between poverty as a child and how well the brain works in adulthood.

The study looked into relationships between childhood poverty at age 9, contact with stressors during childhood, and neural activity in areas of the brain during emotional regulation at age 24. The study was conducted by researchers at UIC, Cornell University, University of Michigan and University of Denver.
