Federal prison has seen a rise of inmates, the growth at great expense to taxpayers and other important fiscal priorities.
The rapid increase in prison population is that more people are sentenced to prison and for longer terms. According to Urban Institute's report, "Stemming the Tide: Strategies to Reduce the Growth and Cut the Cost of the Federal Prison System," federal prisons are overcrowding and prison staffing has not kept up with population growth. The authors of the report project the population and cost savings impact of a variety of strategies aimed at reducing the inmate population without compromising public safety.
