An Urban Institute research notes how homeownership and rent subsidies give protection to individuals from experiencing material hardships.

The Survey of Income and Program Participation as evidenced from the Great recession indicates that the likelihood of experiencing any material privations is lower for homeowners than renters without rent subsidies.
