According to a report stated in the The Value of Community Philanthropy: Results of a Consultation, community philanthropy is now offering ways that enable ordinary people to use their own money and resources to help fix problems and bring about deep-rooted change in their local communities.

Barry Knight, the author of the report, described it as a process that involves "taking what we have to build what we need."
