Growing Valuable Chemical-Rich Seaweed Brings Jobs to Poor Women in India


Rural women in India rope in young seaweed plants in preparation for growing seaweed. The practice offers a steady source of income for these women, who can't be away from their families long enough to engage in fishing.

Valuable chemicals extracted from the seaweed can be used in products such as skin care lotions, fertilizers, toothpastes, and ice cream. Seaweed farming efforts are supported by private investors, industries, NGOs, and financial institutions like the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development and the National Fisheries Development Board.
