Women empowerment in Afghanistan


Dr. Sakeena Yacoobi, Founder and Executive Director of Afghan Institute of Learning (AIL) was honored by The Lotus Circle for her work in building a stable Afghanistan through women’s education and health initiatives. She began educating Afghan women at a refugee camp across the Pakistan border before operating underground schools for girls during Taliban rule, building her program of education, teacher training and health clinics across the country, reaching 8 million people in the process.

The Lotus Circle is a community of committed individuals working together to empower girls and women across Asia through The Asia Foundation’s Women’s Empowerment Program.

Co-founders William Mann and David Mravyan devised the Sensimat during a mandatory project for their MBA at the Richard Ivey School of Business in Canada. Sensimat is a device that helps manage and assess pressure among wheelchair users.
