Friends in Ghana Form Nonprofit to Train Mothers for Jobs


Friends Rebecca Brandt and Callie Brauel, along with Ghanaian Emmanuel Tetteh Quarmyne, formed a nonprofit they dubbed as A Ban Against Neglect, or ABAN that would recycle used plastic water bags and provide sustainable income for the homeless youth by marketing products from the bags.

ABAN trains mothers and have them learn business skills from microfinance organization Hopeline Institute, along with basic health, literacy, English and math skills. After completing the courses and graduating apprenticeship, ABAN matches the mothers' savings to grant them start-up capital to pursue their next job. ABAN's products are available online and sold at stores in Ghana and the United States.
