Southeast Raleigh Nonprofit Grocery Store Provides Shopping Oasis in Food Desert


The Ship of Zion Ministries and Hope Community Church sponsored a new nonprofit grocery store backed by Whole Foods market.

The 900-foot Galley Grocery Store smack dab in Southeast Raleigh shelves fruits and vegetables, stocks dairy, and piles up canned goods, snacks and baking supplies—basics that local residents typically can't buy locally since the area is sparse with convenience stores. The store will also accept SNAP and WIC benefits, and is considering offering cooking and gardening classes.

Bina Sitaram, a 40-year old former senior garment technician in the fashion industry, has created a social enterprise that affords young students lessons in healthy living by holding gardening, cooking and arts and crafts sessions.
