How A Nonprofit Converts Soda-Bottle Waste Into Plastic Thatch Roofs


In rural areas of developing countries, homes have corrugated tin roofs that leak, collapse or get water-logged. To address this problem, a professor of strategic management and sustainability at Duquesne University has invented the Plastic thatch, an alternative sourced from discarded soda bottles.

David Saiia, together with his partner Vannah Le, founded the Reuse Everything Institute to develop and promote the plastic-thatch roofing by transforming bottles into thatch strips and turning them into Naturally Occurring Green Roofs.
