Challenges Faced by Homeless in New York City


David Chapinski, in his guest column on The Alternative Press, discusses the challenges the homeless face in New York City.

He outlines 2013's New York Citys Homeless Shelter Population and describes homelessness as an "extremely complex, multi-faceted, and solution-resistant problem." He addresses personal challenges such as mental illness, substance abuse or histories of domestic violence as catalysts of homelessness. Chapinski notes that vulnerable people are not able to afford normal rents in the city without help and it is clear that the city has yet to solve the problem of homelessness.
