Ball State University director of economic and community development, Richard Heupel, views tourism as a growth industry.

He writes that tourism is an industry where it contributes tremendously to many local economies. Heupel observes the growing number of tourism promoters and points at economic developers to similarly focus on more resources on meeting the demands of local businesses "for broader civic responsibilities."
